When I was instructing, I steered students as far away from Culhane books as possible. The guy comes off as just a douche. We emailed him corrections to his material and he literally responded with 'Go fuck yourself.' Seems he's more interested in just releasing a new edition every year to pull more money out of students than having accurate information. On the flip side, some people swear by the Culhane books, so YMMV. I reviewed the initial editions of the Sharper Edge books for our students and found them to be very good. I'd only assume the latest editions have improved.
I'd definitely recommend those. For some excellent MET theory, get the Air Command Weather Manual and read chapters 1 - 9 (read further at your peril; It got really in depth after that).
